1. Sodium Citrate
2. It is a bi-product of mixing citric acid and baking soda in water.
3. It can be used to treat kidney diseases like gout and stones.
4. Possible side effects include muscle spasms, elevated sodium in the blood, and metabolic alkalosis.
5. The chemicals that it comes from are citric acid and baking soda.
6. The purpose of citric acid is a preservative and baking soda can be used as an antacid.

1. Caffeine
2. Caffeine occurs naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves and chocolate.

6. Preservatives can cause increased blood pressure, cancer, and allergies.

1. Benzoic Acid
2. This comes from gum benzoin.
3. It is an important precursor for the synthesis of many other organic substances.
4. Possible side effects are Erythema multiforme, Blurred vision, Irregular heartbeat, Hives.
5. It is made by partial oxidation of toluene with oxygen.
6. Toluene is a clear insoluble liquid and has no individual side effects.

1. Sorbic acid
2. It is found from the unripe berries of Rowan
3. It is used as a preservative
4. The toxicity is high, which can be bad for some people
5. The traditional route to sorbic acid involves condensation of malonic acid and trans-butenal.
6. Side effects could be possible G.I. problems

1. Acesulfame potassium
2. Comes from fusing two chemical compounds
3. It is a calorie free artificial sweetener
4. Possible side effects are heart disease, obesity, and tooth decay
5. No chemicals to make this up
6. No chemicals so no side effects

1. Sucralose
2. It is made from a chlorinated sugar compound
3. It is an artificial sweetener
4. Possible side effects are obesity, tooth decay and heart disease
5. Chemicals used I this are chlorine
6. Chlorine is used to kill bacteria usually

1. Panax ginseng extract
2. This comes from panax ginseng the plant.
3. This is used for improving thinking.
4. Some men use Panax ginseng on the skin of the penis as part of a multi-ingredient product for treating early orgasm (premature ejaculation), it lowers blood sugar, increases sperm production, and reduces the blood alcohol concentration by reducing absorption from the stomach.
5. They use pesticides and fertilizers to grow the plant
6. Pesticides are there to keep the plant free from insects. Some side effects can range from irritation of the skin and eyes to more severe effects such as affecting the nervous system, mimicking hormones causing reproductive problems, and also causing cancer.

1. Prickly Pear Extract
2. It is an extract of Opuntia ficus.
3. It is used for endurance and stamina.
4. Possible side effects are allergic reactions
5. The chemicals used are pesticides to keep the cactus growing healthy and quickly
6. Possible side effects are cancer, allergic reaction, and irritation

1. Milk thistle extract
2. Thus comes from milk thistle the plant
3. It is used as a liver tonic
4. A possible side effect is an allergic reaction
5. Pesticides are used to keep the plant free from insects
6. Possible side effects are cancer, allergic reaction, and irritation.

1. Niacinamide
2. It is a vitamin that comes from nicotinic acid.
3. It is used as an anti-inflammatory.
4. A possible side effect is being toxic to the liver
5. There are no chemicals used
6. There are no side effects because there are no chemicals.

1. Calcium Pantothenate
2. This is a vitamin that comes from all kinds of natural foods such as eggs, meats, peanuts, corn, and cheese.
3. This helps us turn fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into energy.
4. This has no negative side effects.  It keeps the digestive system healthy, turns fats into energy, and creates red blood cells and antibodies.
5. This is a vitamin and doesn’t have chemicals that help produce this. Unless they extract it from other foods that contain calcium pantothenate, there is nothing that will be used in the production of this vitamin.
6. Because there are no chemicals, there are no side effects.

1. Magnesium Lactate
2. This is a mineral that is natural.
3. This is a mineral needed to support the functions of the heart, nervous system, and digestive system.
4. A possible side effect is diarrhea and an allergic reaction.
5. Magnesium is used in the production of this.
6. Magnesium is toxic unless altered.

1. Gum Arabic
2. It is a natural gum made from hardened sap. It is harvested commercially through wild trees in Senegal.
3. The purpose of the gum Arabic in this case is to give a unique flavor in soft drink syrup.
4. A possible side effect is tooth decay and diarrhea.
5. Chemicals used to make this are pesticides on the trees and having growth “enhancements” on the trees so they grow faster which could be genetically modified trees or fertilizers.
6. Some possible side effects of these are cancer, irritation on the skin, allergic reaction, and it can be toxic

1. Calcium lactate
2. It comes from the action of lactic acid on calcium carbonate.
3. It is used to prevent tooth decay, and in some fruits it is used to prolong shelf life.
4. Some possible side effects of this are hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, and genitourinary.
5. The chemicals used in the production are lactic acid and calcium carbonate.
6. These two are chemically combined to create calcium lactate; therefore there are no side effects because the two are altered to e something different.

1. Ester gum
2. This is refined wood rosin of pine trees.
3. This is used as a food additive.
4. This has no side effects; it is water-soluble and leaves the body through urine. It is used as an alternative to vegetable oil.
5. Chemicals are not added to the production of ester gum. It is extracted and then put into separate things.
6. Do to there being no chemicals, there are no side effects of them.

1. Monopotassium phosphate
2. This is a natural salt
3. This is used as a food additive.
4. It is possible to get potassium poisoning. Respirations are initially altered but skeletal muscle weakness could extend to point of paralysis.
5. There are no chemicals used in the production of this because it is natural, unless you create this in a laboratory.
6. There are no side effects because there are no chemicals. If it were made in a lab, the chemicals would have been altered and would no longer be the same compound, therefore any potential danger would be rendered inert.

1. Pyridoxine hydrochloride
2. This is one of the compounds that can be called vitamin B6. This is found naturally in foods, but most times when it is put in foods it is synthesized in a lab.
3. This helps with the balancing of sodium and potassium.
4. There are no side effects because this is water-soluble.

2. This is a “vitamer” of the vitamin B12 family. This is found naturally in foods but can be produced in a lab for mass production.
3. This is usually given to people with vitamin B12 deficiencies, but in this case it is there just to provide vitamins.
4. It can lead to severe allergic reactions, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, or joint pain.
5.  There are no chemicals in the production of this, only elements
6. There are no side effects because there are no chemicals in the production of this, and the side effects of the individual elements would change due to chemical changes.

About me

My name is Michael Borowski. I am on the swim team and the soccer team. I like gym class because I am able to get active throughout the day and not be cooped up in a classroom for 6 hours straight. It also helps me wake up in the morning, which is greatly needed. Blogging is a good idea because as a class we get to discuss different ideas and topics, and I personally like to blog more than to right an essay. Another reason why blogging is something that I enjoy is because it is less formal. It is a discussion and makes it easier to convey my own ideas.
